Pop History and its Consequences
“Pop” History is a term that’s a bit rough to define, but loosely covers the idea of history media made for popular consumption, with varying degrees of rigor and penetration into the public consciousness. This video aims to clarify its boundaries, constraints, and purpose.

Being the Monster | Vampire Games, and Bloodlines
Переглядів 40 тис.2 місяці тому
Desc: This video is about exploring the idea of “Vampire Gameplay” by looking at games ranging from Blood Omen and Castlevania to Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines. “Being a Vampire” is a sort of play that goes beyond aesthetics into expected and, indeed, typified conventions. That, to me, is more or less a genre. Thanks goes to Len for script help, her stuff can be found here: Twitter: @TilFo...
INSCRYPTION and Player Expectations
Переглядів 7 тис.3 місяці тому
INSCRYPTION is a game that's difficult to approach in more ways that one, but the prime reason, in my view has everything to do with the concept of "spoiler culture". To explore this, I've opted to make a two-part video series, with the first being a spoiler-free introduction to the game (and hoping to get more people into it), and the latter being an exploration of a spoiler-heavy side of the ...

Valkyria Chronicles is a game that fascinates me in the ways it defies genre conventions on all fronts, be it as WW2 inspired media, as anime media, and indeed, to some extent, as a game itself. Paradox and when Maps Mess Up

Paradox Interactive has a strong grasp on the GSG genre. Within that genre (though maybe beyond it) they also produce most all of the “Map Games.” I thought it would be interesting to look at the maps themselves and how elements of real history feature into or are absent from their depictions. Further, there’s something to be discussed in the inconsistency across maps and how that speaks to the...

the snowy Goron mountain region is the least fleshed-out in the game, and the pre-dungeon quest is the least interesting, too. it has really nice ambiance, though, so I find it disappointing there wasn’t more going on there.

At at least one point in this video, the presenter acknowledged that civ v/vi etc are just games. They are not history books. I am not quite sure if he was criticising them for lack of academic rigour, or because he disagrees with the historical descriptions they contain, but neither of those things have much applicability to a computer game producer presenting a 4X game to the mass entertainment market. Their development dollar is spent on coding the UI and catchy graphics, not deep historical research. What is ironic, however, is that (some, at least) teenagers who play a game like civ vi might actually develop an interest in history, geography, politics, etc that will take them far beyond the game - and the often questionable wikipedia page on a subject. They might even read a couple of books, learn some basic SQL coding, and make a mod of some historical country or leader they develop an interest in.

Saddam and his regime were unutterably inhuman as regards their treatment of anyone who fell foul of them (practically anyone not with the Ba'ath party). However, he was entirely in keeping with the ancient kings of Sumer and Akkad which he was styling himself after. Translated cuneiform tablets relate how brutal they were. Weird how history repeats and human behaviour remains relatively consistent.

13:07 The Swedish state of the 1900s was absolutely nothing like the ones from 1523 and the 1700s. The modern swedish state was born in the 1800s and 1917 after the napoleonic wars and after the monarchy lost its power. Also yes i am aware that this is a 2 year old video.

As a history major, I struggle a lot with my feelings towards pop history. It is beneficial and even fun to scrutinize these works in classes but at the same time, it feels like we're showing faux concern towards the public perception of history. For example, why would someone write a book review on "The Poor Had No Lawyers" and question the audacity of writing it or state 'why, pray tell, should anyone take the time to read it?' in the abstract only to put it behind a paywall? The majority of people who would actually pay to read this review are those who have enough knowledge on the historical method to question the validity of the book in the first place. If so, is the review trying to validate academia's attitude towards pop history? Or, if the actual review is more tempered than the abstract as you've said, isn't the author of the review committing the same kind of dramatization/exaggeration they look down upon in pop history? In a way, one of the reasons for pop history being so prevalent is the elitism in academia. I'm not writing any of this to downplay pop history's faults, this video manages to bridge some of the gaps between authenticity and availability but I'm mostly frustrated that a lot of historians view these types of easily accesible reviews as being beneath them. When these works actually influence the public consciousness, politics and even the education system (that they'd then have to struggle to dismantle) it feels like it should be taken more seriously. I feel partially responsible/guilty for being in an environment like this ☹

Let’s make it simple. Transgenderists claim there is an “essence” or “womanhood.” They can’t define it and whe they do they spout gender stereotypes and feelings. Essentialism is by its nature conservative and right wing, imaging some platonic ideal of essences of things. Transgenderism is not compatible with modern philosophy, and instead derives from reactionary elements.
